Well, considering that you're looking for alternatives to your "tendancy to want 4 tanks to bash on everything" and trying to train yourself to "just barf spells at my opponents with no thought for conservation," I'd say go for both: Korgan, Jaheira, Anomen, Cleric/Mage, Imoen, Edwin.
The game is beatable with any party, even one containing Cernd.
