Happily, you don't need to have any proficiency points invested in a weapon if all you're using it for is for temporary resistance to Charm, or the ability to cast Mirror Image, or suchlike. Which brings me to a related point: Two-handed weapons aren't really recommended for solo characters (especially if they have a lot of other equipment restrictions, as the Kensai does), because it limits the amount of protective items you can wear. The Impaler is a great spear, but using it means that you can't have, say, the Defender of Easthaven in your offhand.

Only if you have Tactics installed, which Jorsh does not mention. I find it unlikely that a person who would ask "What sort of equipment is good for a Kensai?" would pit a Solo Halfling Kensai against the Tactics mod.
