I honestly don't think it matters what you put that proficiency point into, you shouldn't be using it anyway.

Like Six said, the only place a level 1 mage belongs is AWAY from melee combat. I just have to hope that you have enough support to carry him until you get your Kensai levels back, or that you have enough money to buy scrolls until the same happens.
