... My advice would be to get some summons first before you go charging off to do some of the tougher battles. Trademeet is fairly easy experience, if you know what you're doing. Get the Boots of Speed if you can. Do the lesser battles (Mencar, Delosar's inn, Sewers, stuff like that). Neb/the Skinner's Murder.
Now, my experience with soloing a Mage in Tactics is that Sunfire is godly. It kills Trolls if you've got them Slowed, it doesn't harm yourself, mages sometimes forget Protection from Fire, it goes through Magic Resistance, is a pretty good combination with Greater Malison(not many will make their saves, easily doubling the damage), and it casts instantly with Robe of Vecna. Therefore, my tactics regarding Torgal's group usually go like this:
Mirror Image, Stoneskin, green Protection from Fire. (no Chaotic Commands, so you'll have to find a substitute; Potions of Clarity, IIRC, should do the trick). Blur. You know, the normal stuff. Dodge in and layer the place with Slows. Don't leave a single Troll un-Slowed. Then, Sunfire all of the suckers. Slow will slow down the regen rate, leaving them open to your attacks. Keep on moving. Don't let that many hits hit you. They're all melee, so use that to your advantage. Once the Trolls are dead, Haste (from a scroll if need-be) some good level summons (Mordy Sword/Skeleton Warriors. Sword Spiders aren't half bad either). Send them in, and Remove Magic the Mage's protections. Watch them die.
Of course, tactics change regarding your character's level/spell selection/equipment. What are they?
