The Familiar item sounds really cool (especially if it could be tricked into revealing bits of Julia's past, against its will), but I don't think it really sounds right for Julia's character. As for what item(s) I would suggest, I need to mull on that.

The prospect of recruiting an NPC wha was still in mid-Dual is one I've liked for a while. One of my mod ideas is Gordon Tetrick, a LN Fighter->Necromancer, who has rededicated himself to the study of his family calling and has therefore sworn not to touch his armor or heirloom sword until he can cast Animate Dead. (Watch the sparks fly between him and Valygar, and just wait till he finds out who the PC's father was!)
