For special item why not bracers. Fighters wore bracers all the time with anything but fullplate. I wouldn't make it an AC bonus though. I'd make it more along the lines of an additional 1/2 or full attack. Just think about it, there aren't a whole lot of bracers/gloves you'd give a fighter in the game so why not. It's not like a piece of jewelry that was a family heirloom and is non-removable, which is sometimes annoying. Or if you wanna add some real flavor you could throw in a familiar type chreature. I was thinking of an imp that thinks it's her squire. It could have some ridiculous dialogue like Lilarcor, and just stay in a little pouch until you let him out. And having them constantly argue could be a way to uncover some background. Just a though, and a nice alternative to the traditional family heirloom type items.
