I was in the same boat during the weekend
I backed up the save folder, plus the character files...I have spent many hours rolling for these stat and didn't want to lose them.
What took the longest time then, was not the HD format and reinstalling the operating system, but ensuring that all the mods were then installed in the correct order for the save games to be valid
