My guess is that the classes are those of the two humans (Barbarian and Mage) and the races are the other two (Dwarf and Elf) since they are the two non-humans.
My first guess would be the party from the OOOOOLD Dyngeons & Dragons cartoon, but that doesn't fit.
They only had one thief and she was a female. They were led by a ranger and had a cavalier in the party too. Don't remember any dwarf being in the party.
Could the theme be something like "Cats & Dogs" - ie, groups that don't like each other??
Barbarians despise mages on general principle and the dislike between Elves and Dwarves is fairly constant throughout most fantasy literature.
I'm just as stumped as everybody else. Apparantly, your "theme" isn't as "obvious" as you think it is Dirty Meg. [/QUOTE]You are right about the two where class is the distinguishing feature being the Barbarian and Mage. But no, not groups that hate each other.
