You're going to get some different (read: disagreeing with you) views on both of those comments (unless certain people aren't reading this thread).
The gist of the objection is that the shapeshifter's progression plateaus and goes nowhere after that, while most of the other classes gain abilities to deal with increasingly difficult enemies.
