It took me a while to figure that out, aswell. Esquire gave you the directions you need, but to narrow it down, do the following:
1.Open BG1 final save, open main characters char. screen, click export, name the file.
2.Open "Character" folder from BG1 root directory, copy, open "character" folder from BG2 root directory, paste
3.Start BG2, select new game, click import on character creation screen, choose the char. file you just C&P:d and play the game
