As to the Baron Ployer sidequest, I resisted using 'pre-encounter' knowledge a couple of times in dealing with his encounter when you have Jaheira in the party...
In fact, the first time I dropped her from the party in sheer annoyance at the emotional baggage she had become. The second time, I killed Ployer on the spot & dropped her aswell. Very cold hearted, I know, but there are other vast subquests and enough NPCs with them which are much more interesting to follow.
(Korgan, Edwin, Valygar...)
So I wouldn't be getting to hung up or critical about this quest.
The world is far too large and full of intrigue to care too much.
