WHY CAN I NOT PAY 500 GOLD AND HAVE A CHIME OF OPENING CUSTOM-MADE BY A WIZARD?! They're NOT complicated.
Did you ever get that door open (doesn't say in the Chronicles)?

Soloing is a real pain in the beginning. I'm soloing a sorcerer in BG1 (using BGTutu) and starting out at level one by yourself as a mage was just a bear. I had one wolf that I ran into after I ran out of spells. I insisted on just using a sling to kill this one little measly wolf out in the middle of the woods. I ran, stopped, shot a bullet, repeat. I went around the perimeter of the map THREE TIMES before I killed that damn wolf! The first few levels meant no stoneskin, no mirror image, no summons, no area effect spells (I am following Dundee's list of solo sorcerer spells, and while good for BG2, it is VERY hard the first few levels with those spell picks). However, my guy is now level 11, and nothing can touch him. He regularly just walks into the middle of hordes of enemies and roasts the whole lot of them with a Sunfire. It is always hard in the beginning, but you get all of the xp to yourself, so you level really quick. You absolutely should do all of the quests you can do with little or no combat right away, just to give yourself a little edge. Oh, and if it even begins to look bad, run. No one is there to back you up; you are all by yourself. You just have to be careful.
