You're not putting it in the room with the umber hulks. You're putting it in the passage way that looks like it's been tunnelled out down the hall - you get a message that says something about there being bones or somesuch and the umber hulks must have been feeding there - put the stew in the 'container' there (not a box, a container that is really the floor).
