You're both wrong! Tim must be an Invoker, according to "Monty Python and the Holy Grail." Who cares about Greater Malison and the summoning spells? Why worry about Melf's Acid Arrow, Flame Arrow, Power Words, or Symbols? That's why Tim has brothers, dangit, big burly lads who can knock anything senseless with their heavy weaponry.
After playing 10 hours of PnP D&D without the party wizard, with only a fighter, a berserker, two rangers, two clerics, a rogue, and a bard, I've come to learn and appreciate the following three things about magi: AoE damage and/or incapacitation spells, spell protection, and spell protection removal. When your character faces a field of angry fighters, archers, and wizards, you'll wish all to heck that you had a mage to cast Cloudkill or Web or Fireball so you didn't have a line of archers playing target practice with your butt while melee attackers carved their initials in your spleen.
