I prefer mixed alignment parties when using NPCs. When playing custom parties of my own creation I use neutral-good aligned compositions, for the most part, although I have also played a few that were mixed and one 'all evil' party.
I recently had a pretty enjoyable time soloing a Neutral Evil cleric-mage. I would recommend giving that class a try some time for a solo 'evil' game. I thought it would be hard but it was almost shockingly easy. You just enter Sanctuary or cast Invisibility when the going gets rough. You can also bypass any fights you don't care to take on that way. With the clerical and mage spells you can use the devastating tactic of approaching unseen in Sanctuary or while invisible, and casting Stinking Cloud and Animate Dead. Or should you get swarmed enter Sanctuary again and cast Protection from Lightning or Fire and go to town with fireballs or lightning point blank. This is an extremely powerful solo class indeed. And when playing Neutral evil you can go around doing whatever you wish.
What is really hard, though, is soloing a faithfully roleplayed good aligned mage without using any monster or undead summoning.
