I think she says you need her help to fight him, not that you should not fight him at all. Go in, talk to Imoen, go out, lead Bhaal inside, then you have to beat the tar out of Bhaal. You can't kill or beat him, but once you do enough damage he talks and.... well, go do this and you'll see.
