I've worked out what the beeping problem was,I,ve got a Logitech cordless mouse with a recharger base,the base plugs into two sockets in the back of my PC I unplugged one of them and the beeping stopped.
It only ever did this with Baldur's gate II so I'm not sure about the reason for it,I'll just leave the socket unnpluged ,it dosen't seem to cause any problems.
