this is my second run with Tactics(insane, of course), and this time maevar was ALOT easier. i remember fighting many reloads with him last time, this time i nailed him on my first try. my party consists of 3 specialist wizards(including edwin), 1 fighter/mage, Jan and Viccy. what i did was cast greater malison as fast as possible, followed by 4 stinking clouds, 2 weapons and 1 greater command, taking out all but maevar, who was stuck behind all the others. then i started throwing fireballs/skull traps and every area spell i had. the assassins did kill my F/M and one of my custom mages, but the assassins died pretty quickly after i got my spells fired, as did scratchy and the priest. maevar was a tad bit harder, especially since he confused Jan and Edwin. i managed to kill him by having my PC cast stone skin, fireshield red/blue, mirror image and ghost armor and viccy cast true seeing to make him targetable by spells. the trouble was, i didnt have many spells left. so i let him bash me(injuring himself all the while) until i had two layers of SS left, after which i cast Fire Arrow from a scroll and Poison with viccy. it took him out alright...aah, i love mages .
btw, why do i have fireshield and Improved Harm in my special abilites section? i dont remember having these in my last tactics game...
