The SoA storyline keeps you going while BG1 makes you linger around a lot. It also gives you a reason (fundraising) for the sidequest.
What's great about BG1 is starting from scratch (i.e. lvl1) but I like the SoA solution (contrary to other RPG sequels you do retain your status from part 1).
I also like starting out in the big city instead of moving on to the city and the enemies are way cooler. I think the XP range in SoA is just perfect. BG1 is a little low for my liking and ToB is definitely too high.
