I think that when people, before playing BGII, thought of a powerful wizard, they would automatically think of the mage instead of the sorcerer. At least I did. I always thought that the mage was the pure-class spellcaster/wizard and that the sorcerer was some sort of degenerate wanna-be spellcaster:"can only learn several spells at level up. does not pre-memorize spells". I was thinking how lame this character would be. Never did I realize how great his potential was, because I thought his spellbook was rather restricted(detect alignment was considered one of the more vital spells one my first try with spellcasters as was Carrion summons ), nor the fact that he can cast up to 4 times two level 8 spells!!!
And offcourse in BG people were forced to chose a mage cuz there wasn't a sorcerer available.
