Re: Disney Is Shutting Down LucasArts Games!!!
Yes, I saw that yesterday on The Daily What (which used to be more ahead-of-the-curve than it is now) and the videogame section of Cheezburger.
So...Disney doesn't want to make games only license them so that other companies can make them? On the one hand that makes sense--as a corporation their goal is to make money, not games, and licensing limits their exposure; if the game fails to deliver then they can make the game design company pay some fee written into the contract and they won't have spent the money on design and development. On the other hand they are acting stupidly--you do not fire the entire development team responsible for some of the most fan-loved games of the last decade. My last employer did that--the company got bought and the new owner wanted to ship everyone to Atlanta or Kansas City but we said "no" and all left, which is why their stock price is about 1/3 what it was two years ago and our new company has gone from "emerging from bankruptcy" to "the largest and the industry leader" in only two years.
Disney is well-known as the king of direct-to-DVD with their cheap movies aimed at the 4- to 7-year-old demographic that would never make a profit at the theater. It is logical, then, that their newly-acquired video game franchise will do the same.
Personally, I oppose Disney every chance I get. I view them as one of the lowest expressions of our culture currently in existence.
