You might want to view the test track footage, there you can see the 'real' purpose of those "ugly" blades. I've had the privilege of driving on the Autobahn, and at 140+ MPH, things are not as they are at say, less than 75. One needs that little bit of 'edge' to keep the front end steering, and the rear end in line.
I've heard in recent times, the A-bahn has a speed limit in most sections, with an upward limit of 220KPH (135MPH), and most areas reduced to 120KPH (75MPH). We used to run the A70 from Schweinfurt to Bamberg, roughly 60 KM, in about 18 minutes, ahh, those were the days!
