Does it actually feel suitably epic being the culmination of entire Northrend saga when running through the raid itself? I remember ToTC/VoA raids being fun but they were more like running a few large raid sized boss fights in quick succession.

Yes it does feel pretty epic, and they have more cutscene/roleplay stuff like what they have in Culling of Stratholme of the new instances, though most people just want to rush ahead to the raid boss killing stuff. Some of the encounters are more creative too, for one of them (Valithria) you have to heal her up to 100% instead of killing her.
The first wing is entirely puggable now by the way, esp. with the 10% buff to healing/dps etc everyone gets when they enter the instance.
