It's a big black mark on his career, and is no doubt the reason he was never PotUS. The incident was almost certainly DUI Manslaughter (did they have that crime back then?), but the local police that investigated were most certainly beholden to the Kennedys in some manner, so it was covered up. There went his chance for higher office.
