The black smoke let him live. It was kind of cool seeing were the black smoke comes from, almost seems like some sort of Alien technology. I wonder if the island is like the lost garden of Eden and in the end it says we were created by Aliens. From what I have seen on this show so far. Anything is possible. It is good that Dan is back in the latest episode and we see how the man in the videos is linked to all this.
