It's bandying semantics, but I won't lay the root cause at religion. At the misinterpretation of religion, perhaps, but not religion itself.
I'm reminded of a line from
Tucker, a book by Old West author Louis L'Amour. Shell Tucker is talking with his dad after Shell started hanging out with some local "tough" guys.
