The books are just there as extras, to give you some background info on the setting of the game. You can sell them, they aren't needed for anything in the game.

And yes, you can stow any excess equipment into the chests and barrels you find. If you leave stuff on the floor though, it will disappear after a while. BTW, some areas are "reset" during the game, which does make you lose the equipment put in the chests. So for your storage, pick a container that is 1. in a "safe" area, and 2. in an area that you will be able to revisit throughout the game. Waukeen's Promenade in Athkatla is a good area.
