Just thought of something. In BG2, there is an new class called the Sorcerer and this may be closer to what you were wanting out of a mage. It's basically a mage that can cast any of his spells without having to pick certain ones to memorize in advance. He can cast up to 6 spells of each level per day, and they can be all of the same spell or a combination of different spells of that level. That's like having your entire spell book memorized 6 times over and being able to cast any 6 spells from each level. That makes the Sorcerer very versitle because he can for example either cast 6 Fireballs, or 3 Fireballs and some protective spells or whatever else, depending on what's needed for the situation.
The problem is that the Sorcerer can only know up to 5 spells on each level, which obviously makes the Sorcerer not quite so versitle They are really powerful though when accompanied by a secondary mage for backup spells.
