If you're talking about the room with the Memphits in the cages, do as Xen said. Kill the ones in cage from a distance with Yoshimo and his bow.

If you're talking about the room where the wind-statue was the key, I suggest you use Minsc. By this time, you should've gotten atleast one Oil of Speed, which is really great. Make Minsc drink one of these first, then put him in Berserker rage, and he'll get rid of the Memphits in no time.

EDIT] As for the manual, there's really no need to read it. Go through the tutorial first, and you'll learn everything you need to know.
