2nd edition handbook says
"(Wisdom) applies to saving throws against magical spells that attack the mind:beguiling, charm, fear, hypnosis, illusions, possession, suggestion, etc."

Wisdom over 19 actually starts granting immunity to some of these spells, too, and at 25 Wisdom you'd be immune to about 20-25 mind altering spells.

Also, Wisdom is supposed to have an effect on your chances of spell failure. So Priests with low wisdom scores and party members alike may be highly upset at that one.

Not sure how much of this was actually implemented into the game tho.
