If you're interested at all in VB, Microsoft offers both VB 2005 and 2008 express editions, for free. My instructors have told me that there hasn't been anything that they've needed to do in the .NET environment with VB that these two express editions have not allowed them to do.
Plus, if I open source my DC editors project, you can totally help me out if you know some VB.
