Here's a couple of scenarios where summoning would be useful (I mean other than summoning something to fight beside or against the players).
1) A mounted enemy gets up after the mount falls and the combat continues
2) I dealt with this twice in real life recently, I squashed a spider only to have what looked like hundreds of baby spiders scattering out from the body.
3) If you had instead of just your party control of platoons from an army, you could split these platoons into smaller units for more attacks (but less strength)
4) In the book of the first 10 dungeons and dragons boxset modules that I occasionally talk about, a creature had some weapons known as "daggers of sorcery" that when thrown at someone would hit or miss, but regardless would animate and attack each round after until struck for over 4 points of damage.
And these are just some of the many reasons we need to figure out some way of summoning
