You should check out Craigslist. You can pretty regularly find pentium 4 desktops running at 1 ghz with decent hard drives and ram for under $50 (or at least you can in Portland).
I never bothered to read the manual, and have only used it as a reference work.
This certainly saved me from printing a couple hundred pages.
