As someone who's never played BG1 or BG2 with an imported character, I can say you won't have any trouble at all making do with what you find in Irenicus's dungeon. Once you make it out, there will be merchants galore with tons of +1 and +2 level weapons/armor, and even a fair smattering of +3 and +4 level equipment.
I've heard that certain BG1 items will actually show up in Irenicus's dungeon in various places if your imported character had them. I'm sure a search on "import" on this forum will turn up more details if someone doesn't reply with more detail in this thread.
