No way. Dualing RULES. Sure, you have to do more planning ahead to do it well, but that's what Baldur's Gate gate is all about: Planning ahead. For instance, You could take Imoen to Level 7, have her get 100% in 2 skills (say, Stealth and Traps), and Dual. There are very few places with traps in the first half of the game, so if you hurry up and do those areas BEFORE you Dual, and then avoid Trapped areas until she's out of the Dual, you're home free. Or have her learn skills that you're not going to miss that much, like Pockets. Think. Plan ahead. You WILL need a second Thief, of course--and what's wrong with that? Coran's my favorite NPC in the game. (Kivan IS a better all-around character.....but give Coran a Bow, and the Gauntlets of Ogre Power for a Backstab, and LOOK OUT!)

Alternatively, there's the I'm-too-sleepy-to-think-straight method of selling yourself short on Dual-classing: Dual Imoen at Level 2, making her a normal Mage who can use a Bow and Potions of Perception.
