I do like the 1e version best, I guess - the 2e one looks kind of like a 4-legged spider or something... and the interesting plumage designs are also gone...
As for the flesh golem - well, even evil wizards have to show some modesty with their creations
Flesh golems are basically like Frankenstein's creation - and HE had pants, too!
