Ah - I see, no wonder why Ancient Red Dragons were just 2 x 2 (if I remember correctly).
Yeah, AD&D oliphants seem to be smaller (8'-10') than even the mundane (?) African elephant (11'). My mammoth is just 12' to keep it in the 2 x 2 size (10'-14', so it is average height).
Then there are hollyphants (the outer planar elephants of good) and the maelephants (sp?) (the outer planar elephants of evil)
I think that for some reason 1e had the first, but 2e had the second... Was TSR against the good image of proboscidians or something?
The Lord of the Rings oliphants were definitely very cool, though.
