But remember Imoen is missing for most of the game, so I am not sure she is the best choice. I would recomend Jan or Yoshimo for a lock picker. As to a mage, Edwin is great, though he does like to argue with your other party members, especially as the party's reputation grows. There is also Aerie, who as a cleric/mage comes in handy.
As to tanks, I think Minsc rocks with great strength.
