Well, you probably heard him one way or another, but it's not really that weird if you didn't recognize him, you gotta be familiar with classic and opera. He had quite a unique voice, but if you let me choose out of 5 tenors which voice is Pavarotti's, i guess i wouldn't know the answer either, all tenors sound the same to me.
On the plus side, should you be interested in his music, you'll probably find most of it in the bargainbins these days.
