There is a much better use for the real ore then giving it to the temple.
If you play your cards right, you can keep the real ore, and make the temple happy.
After the artist refuses the fake ore (make sure the real stuff isnt in your inventory) go to the temple. Tell them what happened, someone will show up, say that he likes the fake ore, and accept it as a new piece of artwork for the temple. The temple is happy, and you get to keep the real ore to upgrade the Mace of Disruption.
