It's part of the sentence. Public shame is part of the punishment. As Larry has said, if it keeps people from putting their kids in danger unawares, then that's a healthy thing.

I like the registry as it creates a community awareness like in times past. A person can't hide behind the anonyminity of a large and mobile city/nation. It helps communities protect each other.

A rape victim lives with the consequences of the crime all their life. The emotional scarring, a baby perhaps, or a damaged womb. Why should the perpetrator not deal with life-long consequences also? It's a heinous thing to commit a sexual crime. Enormously anti-social. Perhaps this registry creates a better understanding of the word "anti-social".
