I have to admit that I can't stand Drizzt.

I'm involved with fanfiction, as you probably all know; if not, mock me now. But there's a term in fanfiction which applies to Drizzt: Mary Sue.

Mary Sue was originally coined in Star Trek, I believe, where it was used to describe Wesley Crusher; a character (or so I've heard) so perfect he was annoying, yet utterly character-less.

An essay on what constitues a Mary Sue.

Nowadays, in fanfiction terms, a Mary Sue is a perfect character. She crops up in fandoms with pretty boys, where she is beautiful, intelligent, wonderfully good-humoured, and ends up with whichever character her author thinks is most sexy. Most Mary Sues are self-inserts, where the author imagines herself in, say, Middle Earth as Crystal, elf Princess of Sugarstarland and beloved of Legolas.

EDIT: Fxed a type.
