Margret Weis and Tracy Hickman, are my favorite. Tolkien has a permanate place in sci-fi history of course. In the Dragonlance saga there is a trilogy called, "The Dwarvin Nations" trilogy, written by an author by the name of Dan Parkinson. Did a very good job in my opinion. I was quite surprised to find out he was mostly a western author!
