This has been done before.

Rules and mechamisms-wise 3rd ed is far superior to 2nd ed. It is easier to figure out, less inconsistent and makes it easier to alter a lot of things.

On the other hand I think that many of the resources and campaign settings are inferior to 2nd ed. The Forgotten Realms stuff is just fine, but the Manual of the Planes suck. Also the psionicists have been nerfed and has lost a lot of their uniqueness.

I am also somewhat critical of the concept behind the monk class.
