I had this idea of making paladins a kind of "order-knights" who had given their life to an order, viciously upholding it's laws and ideas getting mystical powers and special training in return.
What powers you would get would depend on the specific order. Some orders are holy bastions of goodness, other are demonic cabals and some follow agendas far beyond the scope of mere mortals.
