I'm 20, and I've been around computers all my life, and using them since I was a kid. (My father's a computer programmer for the government.) The first love of my life was a Tandy 2000. Now that I have a comp-in-the-box, sophisticated word processing programs, etc., I'm finding that everything I ever published started on my Tandy's WordStar program. So phooey on Microsoft and Word. Anyway, back on topic (if there ever was a topic to begin with...off-topic and ToB in the same thread...Dundee must be having a field day with us!), my formal introduction to the Internet came when I was 14. I impressed people with "leet typing skillz" and many of the groups I joined six years ago made me some sort of moderator. :*)
I am all in favor of correct typing. It bothers me that people can just turn off their brains when typing on fora or message boards or whatever, because "it doesn't matter." In order to communicate ideas to other people, the other people must understand what you say! So type right. Not only will you be easier to understand, but people will care about what you say because they can read it.

I must admit that my grammar is lax. Passive voice, split infinitives, dangling prepositions/subjects/predicates, yeah, I do that. I'm an english major, shame on me. It's my way of taking off my shoes and loosening my tie. Posting on web. Time to have fun!
