Two British newspapers report that doctors have documented the first ever case of a person spontaneously recovering from HIV, the virus which causes AIDS.
In August 2002, a 25-year-old man from London, Andrew Stimpson, was diagnosed as HIV-positive. Fourteen months later tests found no trace of the virus. Mr Stimpson never took medication for HIV and doctors are certain that both samples are from the same person.
There have been many anecdotal reports of people spontaneously recovering from AIDS in Africa, but this is the first case in which there is conclusive evidence.
