An outback pub in southwest Queensland has all but run out of beer and rum thanks to bored farmers left twiddling their thumbs by recent rain.
Nindigully has swelled from its usual population of nine to more than 200, as wet weather forced farmers and truck drivers to stop work.
Several inches of rain have fallen around the southern border district prompting locals to head to the Nindigully hotel, 600km west of Brisbane, to pass the time until their crops dry out.
The local hotel owner Steve Burns he's praying more supplies of beer and rum arrive soon.
"If the truck doesn't turn up till Friday we're in all sorts of trouble,” A worried Mr Burns predicts.
“The truckies get a little bit toey if they can't get a take away carton to sit down on the river and have a beer. I think they will get pretty stressed if we run out.”
He says the dark clouds are gathering again over Nindigully, which doesn’t bode well for his eagerly awaited consignment of booze.
“I don't like to be the weather forecaster but if it rains again, we’re in trouble."
And the shortage won’t go away when the grog arrives – unless Nindigully drinkers can aquire a taste for warm beer.
“Monday morning I ordered what would be pretty close to a semi trailer load or 12 tonnes of beer and spirits to replace what they drank.
“We're waiting on the grog like expectant fathers because it takes us 24 hours minimum to chill it down.”
