you mean as opposed to a life sentence? yes there is!

in most europe (and in many other countries I suppose), it makes a difference when you appeal for a realease after serving some amount of time. I could be way off with the figures, but I think in Poland you can appeal after serving 50% of your time, or in case of lifetime after 25 years.

So if you get lifetime you can appeal after 25 years and get out of prison... if you get 2000 years, you can appeal after 1000 years. Which would be less effective seeing how your lawyer would be dead by then .
