Anybody here a good with home repairs?

I have a Maytag washing machine that stopped taking in water after it went off-balance and did not shut itself off because the auto-shutoff had been broken for a while. The machine will run properly once water is added to it externally.

Looking up the information, I learned that the only thing it could be is the water intake valve, which has two switches,,,one for the cold and one for the hot. Depending on the selected temperature, those valves open to let the water through. I was going to order the part, but before doing so I was wondering if there is a chance that the problem is not with the valve, but the hot/cold/warm switch that makes the valves open. How would I test such a theory?
